Understanding the world around me is of utmost importance, so nature has always influenced my work. I'm fascinated by primates and this painting is my reflection on the YouTube video of Tori, the smoking orangutan. Tori lives in the Taru Jurug Zoo in Solo, Indonesia. I was without words listening to the narrator describe an endangered species chain-smoking cigarettes. People visiting the zoo would throw cigarettes into Tori's enclosure. She would retrieve them, chain-smoking one after another, lighting each cigarette with the previous one. She would even gesture to visitors for more cigarettes. And if they did not oblige her request, she would become irate. Tori was addicted to nicotine for over 10 years before undergoing rehabilitation. In my reflection, I considered Tori's baby, Jokowi. Would she follow in her mother Tori's footsteps? It is from this creative space that this painting was born.

Project Stagecoach
I created this a large-scale sculptural project, which was commissioned by C.S.S. Events for the country music festival “
Stagecoach” in Indio, CA. Both pieces are made out of 1-pound density EPS Foam, they’re hard coated with StyroSpray and painted. This project had a fabrication time of two weeks start to finish and over 300 pounds of foam was used.
